Vandals do damage to 40 graves in a Jewish cemetery in Germany

Vandals desecrated a Jewish cemetery in eastern Germany on Wednesday, causing damage to more than 40 graves, authorities said.

The majority of the damage in Koethen, Saxony-Anhalt, was caused by gravestones being toppled over, according to Dessau-Rosslau police.

They estimated the vandalism at the ancient burial place to be worth roughly 20,000 euros.

The crime is likely to have occurred between September 15 and September 19.

Anti-Semitism remains a hot topic in Germany seven decades after the Holocaust, in which the Nazi regime massacred six million Jews.

According to the Federal Association of Research and Information Centres on Anti-Semitism (RIAS), anti-Semitic occurrences decreased in 2022 compared to the previous year, while anti-Semitic violence increased.

In 2022, there were 2,480 anti-Semitic events reported, including nine incidences of serious violence an all-time high since the study began in 2017.

A gunman killed two people in the eastern city of Halle in October 2019 after failing to storm a synagogue on Yom Kippur.

Prior to the incident, he had published an online racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic screed.
