Nigeria listed among nine countries to see worsening hunger in 2023

According to the most recent Global Hunger Index (GHI), nine nations, including Nigeria, are predicted to experience rising hunger throughout the year.

A comprehensive method for monitoring and measuring hunger at the international, regional, and national levels is the GHI.

The nations with the worst hunger conditions in 2023, in addition to Nigeria, are Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Yemen, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

According to the GHI assessment, there is currently widespread, extreme hunger, and in the upcoming year, things are only expected to get worse.

The paper emphasizes that economic downturns are far more ubiquitous components in these crises, even though conflict and climate change both play substantial roles in their development.

“Severe hunger is a global problem in 2023, and the situation is only likely to get worse throughout the course of the year.

Early warning resources show that many parts of the world are in crisis, even though conditions in 2023 are not yet represented by the data in this year’s GHI ratings, according to the index study.

Out of the 125 nations for which there is enough information to compute 2023 GHI scores, Nigeria is ranked 109th.

Nigeria has a GHI score of 28.3, which indicates that there is severe hunger in the nation.
