The Guinness Book of Records is a famous reference book which keeps record of outstanding achievements attained by humans.
It was published in 1955 by the Guinness Brewery in Ireland and since then it has evolved be one of the world’s most esteemed and widely read reference books.
To establish a record in this book, one must provide proofs to the Guinness World Records team and go through a verification process so as to be fit to be listed in this book.
Over the years, many individuals have achieved this feats through their God-given talents and intellects and Nigerians are also not left out.
This article looks at exceptional Nigerians who have successfully pegged their names in the Guiness World Records their prowess.
1. Tunde Onakoya
Tunde Onakoya, a 29 year old Nigerian from Ogun State has been listed in the GWR after he surpassed the previous record for the longest chess marathon of 56 hour in New York’s Times Square, reaching an uninterrupted 57-hour chess session in April, 2024.
2. Philip Solomon
A 17 year old Nigerian student, Philip Solomon has also been listed in the Guiness World Records holding the record for most skips on one foot in 30 seconds.
He set a new record of 153 in January, 2023 against the former record of 145 set by Rasel Islam of Bangladesh.
3. Vincent Okezie
Vincent Okezie achieved his fifth GWR to become the current holder of the most football ‘around the world’ tricks (71) with arms linked in March, 2023.
4. Hilda Baci
Hilda Effiong Bassey, a renowned Chef achieved world fame by breaking GWR for the longest cook-a-thon in May, 2023.
She broke the record for the longest cooking marathon with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes, giving her a place in the Guiness World Records.
5. Divine Ikubor (Rema)
Nigerian music star, Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, successfully secured spot at the Guinness World Book of Records in May, 2023.
His hit song, ‘Calm Down’ made history as the No. 1 Hit song on The Official MENA Chart which is the world’s first regional streaming chart.
6. Gbenga Ezekiel
Gbenga Ezekiel achieved the most skips in one minute on one leg (278), setting his own record of 265, and the most double under skips in one minute on one leg (144) in October, 2022 surpassing the previous record of 132, set by India’s Himanshu Prajapati in 2021.
7. Folashade Oluwafemiayo
In 2021, Folashade Oluwafemiayo achieved the gold medal in her event at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships held in Tbilisi, Georgia.
She successfully set a new world record of 152.5 kg at the 2022 Commonwealth Games where securing a gold medal in the heavyweight event.
8. Chukwuebuka Ezugha and Victor Richard Kipo
Chukwuebuka Ezugha and Victor Richard Kipo, both from Nigeria achieved the great feat for the most consecutive passes of a football between the head and soles by a team of two.
They achieved this feat in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, on March 11, 2022 with the passes of 252.
9. Bayo Omoboriowo
Bayo Omoboriowo broke the Guinness World Record for creating the Largest Photo Book in 2021.
The photo book was done in collaboration with The JT Agency and with the federal government’s support, is 60.84 square metres (654 square feet and 87 square inches) which was a recreation of a photo collection titled Discover Nigeria.
10. Bose Omolayo
Bose Omolayo secured a spot in the Guinness World Records in 2021 when she made the heaviest para power lift by a female in the -79 kg category at 144 kg.
