AFCON 2023: 10-man Cote d’Ivoire stuns Mali, qualify for semi-final
Ivory Coast staged another incredible Africa Cup of Nations escape act, as Oumar Diakite’s 122nd-minute goal propelled the 10-man Elephants into the semi-finals at the expense of a sad Mali.
The hosts faced a numerical disadvantage for the duration of the game as Odilon Kossounou was sent off for two first-half fouls on Lassine Sinayoko, and they fell behind to Nene Dorgeles’ superb curler.
However, the Elephants equalised on 90 minutes through Simon Adringa’s opportunistic goal, and won it with almost the last kick of extra time when Diakite diverted Seko Fofana’s attempt.
Diakite departed the field with mixed emotions, as a second yellow card for removing his jersey in celebration means he will miss Wednesday’s semi-final against DR Congo (20:00 GMT).
After the final whistle, several Mali players surrounded referee Mohamed Adel and argued with him, and Hamari Traore was issued a red card for going too far with his objections.
