Biography

Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, a former Nigerian commissioner for justice and attorney general, was born on July 1, 1972. From August 2010 to November 2014, he also held the position of Commissioner in the Ministry of Regional Integration & Special Duties.Prior to May 2017, he worked as a lecturer at Osun State University from November 2014. From 2019 to 2023, he was a senator for the Osun Central Senatorial District.

 

Political History

Basiru was a part of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), which later changed its name to Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and finally to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In addition to serving in the first term as the Honorable Commissioner of Regional Integration and Special Duties, he was a commissioner under Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’s government. He was afterwards appointed as the state’s Honorable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice during the second term.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) chose Basiru to represent the Osun Central Senatorial District, and he was made the head of the Senate Committee on Diaspora, Non-Governmental Organizations, and Civil Societies. Later, he received a meritorious appointment to the position of Senate Spokesperson and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs.

In the Senate, Basiru served on the following committees:

  1. Advisory Committee on Air Force
  2. Committee on the Downstream Oil and Gas Sector
  3. Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Issues
  4. Advisory Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream)
  5. Advisory Committee on States and Local Governments

Educational History

The University of Ilorin accepted Basiru to study Arabic and Islamic Studies, but he was expelled after just one year. He was granted admission to the L.L.B. (Hons) Bachelor of Laws program at the University of Lagos in Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, which he would attend from 1994 to 2000.

He received a Second Class, Upper Division while attending The Nigeria Law School in Bwari, Abuja, FCT (2001–2002). He studied LLM (Master of Laws) in Secured Credit Transactions, Planning & Compulsory Acquisition, Law of the Sea, and Comparative Company Law at the University of Lagos from 2005 to 2006. In 2016, Basiru completed his Ph.D. in Property Law at the University of Lagos’ Faculty of Law.
