Akpabio withdraws statement after saying a token as been sent to Senators account for enjoyment (video)

Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, has generated controversy on social media after footage surfaced of him saying on live television that senators had received money to enjoy their break before contradicting his statement.

The screening and confirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s nominations for cabinet positions was completed by the Red Chamber on Monday.

The senators then decided to postpone the plenary until September 26.

Before the motion for adjournment was made, Akpabio addressed his colleagues and announced that the senators have received money from Magaji Tambuwal, the clerk of the national parliament, to “enjoy” their holidays.

“In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the clerk of the national assembly,” he said.

The senate president was quickly informed by his colleagues that he was speaking before live television and press cameras.

Upon realising the magnitude of his remarks, Akpabio swiftly beat a retreat.

“I withdraw that statement,” he said.

“In order to allow you to enjoy your holiday, the senate president has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return.”
