Arsenal clinch 1-0 victory against Man City, first win in 8 years

Arsenal defeated Manchester City at Emirates Stadium in a statement victory thanks to a thrilling late goal from Gabriel Martinelli.

A dramatic finish was given to a fairly lackluster game four minutes from the end, just as both teams were destined to settle for a draw.

Martinelli, who had been out with a hamstring injury, came on as a substitute and scored, deflected in by Nathan Ake, giving Arsenal their first league victory over City since December 2015.

Wild celebrations ensued when the Gunners tied their rivals from north London, Tottenham, for first place in the standings.

Up to the goal, the main discussion point concerned how Mateo Kovacic of Manchester City managed to stay on the field despite making two late tackles on Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

Josko Gvardiol’s attempt from City’s first opportunity was cleared off the line by Rice, and then Ake scooped a shot from close range over the crossbar.

Julian Alvarez twice almost caught David Raya in possession on his line as the Arsenal goalie struggled.

However, it was the home team that celebrated when Martinelli, who was brought on as a substitute for the second half, made that crucial contribution.
