Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed is a politician from Bauchi State. He was former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Senator of Bauchi State. He is the incumbent governor of Bauchi State since 2019 and a chieftain of the people’s Democratic party.

Biography

Bala Mohammed was born on 5th October, 1958 at Duguri Town in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

He attended Duguri Primary School, Bauchi from 1965 to 1971 where he secured his First School Leaving Certificate after which he attended Government Secondary School Bauchi from 1972 to 1976.

He further went to the North East College of Art and Science between and 1977 and 1979 for his Advanced Level Certificate and subsequently gained admission to the University of Maiduguri in 1979 and graduated in 1982 with BA Degree in English Language.

He also attended the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) in 1988 for a general management course.

In 1997, he attended a capacity building training in Lagos and was given a certificate of the Institute of Purchase & Supplies.

Personal Life

Gov. Bala Mohammed is a Muslim and married to Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed, they both have two children.

Early career

He began his career as a journalist and rose to the position of News Editor of the Mirage Newspaper, Jos between 1982 and 1983.

He also had a stint as a News Reporter with the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN).
He moved over to the Democrat Newspaper where he worked as the newspaper’s State Editor in charge of Benue from 1983 to 1984.

In 1984, he left left journalism for civil service as an Administrative Officer in the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, Abuja.

In 1994, he was promoted and redeployed as Principal Administrative Officer in the Cabinet Secretariat of the Presidency.

He was Chief Supplies Officer, Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals from 1995 to 1997.

He was promoted to the post of Assistant Director in the Federal Ministry of Power and Steel in 1997.

He held the position until 1999 when he was promoted Deputy Director/SA to the Hon Minister between 1999 to 2003.

In 2003, he was made Director of Administration, Nigerian Railway Corporations and subsequently Special Assistant to the Minister of Aviation.

In January, he became Director of Administration and Supplies, Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

Political career

In 2007, he won the South Senatorial seat in Bauchi State at the capacity of a senator under the party platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) till 2010 when he became FCT Minister.
While at the senate chamber, he became one of the outspoken legislators in Nigeria and served in different house Committees.

He was the Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Aviation, Secretary, Northern Senator’s Forum. The committees included Communication, Finance, Public Account, Rules and Business, Environment, Labor and Productivity.

He joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and became a close ally of President Goodluck Jonathan following President Umaru Yar’ Adua’s death.

Senator Bala Mohammed was sworn in as the Governor of Bauchi State under the Peoples Democratic Party banner on May 29, 2019, after defeating the incumbent Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, by 515,313 votes to 500,625 votes. The victory was sustained by the Supreme Court on January 20, 2020.
