EPL: Liverpool defeats Luton to extend lead at top
Liverpool went four points clear at the top of the Premier League after coming from behind to defeat Luton at Anfield.
Luton lead at halftime thanks to a header from Chiedozie Ogbene, but Liverpool, particularly Luis Diaz, squandered chance after chance.
The Reds were on fire after the half, and their efforts were rewarded when skipper Virgil van Dijk powered home a header from a 56th-minute corner.
Liverpool took the lead just 125 seconds later when Cody Gakpo nodded in from close range after Alexis MacAllister sent in a cross from the byline.
Diaz’s ninth shot of the game resulted in the third goal in the 71st minute, rewarding his tireless efforts.
The Colombian attacker weaved his way into the box and coolly side-footed past Thomas Kaminski at the near post, giving the hosts some breathing room on what appeared to be a potentially disastrous night in the title chase.
Harvey Elliott, making his 100th appearance for the club, capped a strong second half by pounced on a loose ball in the 90th minute to score the fourth.
It was Liverpool’s third win in a row after losing 3-1 at Arsenal last month, and it added to their momentum as they prepare for Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley.
Jurgen Klopp’s side leads second-placed Manchester City by four points, despite having played one more game than the defending champions, while Luton remains third from bottom.
