EPL: Newcastle defeats 10-man Chelsea 4-1
Newcastle returned to winning ways in the Premier League with an overwhelming victory over Chelsea at St James’ Park, with to second-half goals from Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton, and Anthony Gordon.
On the hour mark, Lascelles’ free header from Gordon’s cross gave the Magpies a 2-1 lead, then Joelinton took advantage of a Thiago Silva error to extend the hosts’ lead just 90 seconds later.
And Gordon scored his fifth goal of the season with seven minutes remaining to complete a convincing victory for Newcastle, who had previously lost at Bournemouth.
Fit-again Alexander Isak opened the score in the first half, firing a polished finish past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after a threaded cross from 17-year-old Lewis Miley.
Ten minutes later, Raheem Sterling’s exquisite free kick restored parity, but the visitors were the architects of their own demise in the second half, as Lascelles and Joelinton put the game out of Chelsea’s reach.
They were reduced to ten men when Reece James received a second yellow card for a tackle on Gordon, who scored late on.
Newcastle’s sixth consecutive home league victory brings them within three points of fourth-placed Tottenham, while Chelsea remains just outside the top half.
