JUST-IN: Augustine Eguavoen appointed as interim coach for Super Eagles
Augustine Eguavoen, a former Nigerian defender, has been named the Super Eagles’ interim head coach after Jose Peseiro’s contract with the Nigeria Football Federation expired.
Eguavoen, the Nigeria Football Federation’s technical director, will be assisted by Finidi George, who has previously worked with Peseiro.
Peseiro, who led the Super Eagles to second place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which ended in Cote d’Ivoire on February 11, officially declared and outlined the expiration of his contract with the NFF earlier today.
The Portuguese renewed his contract in September 2023, which was set to expire in February 2024, with the goal of advancing the Super Eagles to at least the semi-finals of the 2023 AFCON.
He was previously rumored to be on Algeria’s radar, but he was never considered for the Desert Foxes post, as the North African Nations announced the appointment of former Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic for 2026 World Cup qualifying on Thursday.
Eguavoen, who has managed the country at several international levels, most recently coached the Super Eagles in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, where they lost to Tunisia in the round of 16.
