Kashim Shettima was born to the family of Sir Kashim Ibrahim on September 2, 1966, in Maiduguri, Borno State.

EDUCATION

From 1972 until 1978, he attended Lamisula elementary School in Maiduguri for his elementary schooling.

From 1978 to 1980, Shettima continued her education at the Government Community Secondary School in Biu.

He continued his secondary schooling at Government Science Secondary School, where he graduated in 1983.

At the University of Maiduguri, Kashim Shettima received his B.Sc. in Agricultural Economics in 1989.

In the now-defunct Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Calabar, the state capital of Cross River State, which is located in the South-South area of Nigeria, he served his one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) term from 1989 to 1990.

He additionally attended the University of Ibadan in Southwest Nigeria, where he earned a Master of Science (MSc) in Agricultural Economics in 1991.

Shettima served as a lecturer for the University of Maiduguri’s Department of Agricultural Economics from 1991 and 1993.

CAREER

In 1993, he started his career in banking and was hired by Commercial Bank of Africa Limited to lead the accounts department in Ikeja, Lagos State.

There, Shettima worked from 1993 to 1997. He began working at the African International Bank Limited as a deputy manager in 1997 and was promoted to manager in 2001.

In 2001, he switched to the Zenith Bank, where he eventually rose to the position of branch manager for Maiduguri.

He advanced through the bank’s ranks to become Senior Manager/Branch Head, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Head (North-East), and Deputy General Manager/Zonal Head (North-East) before departing as a General Manager in 2007 after being appointed Commissioner for Finance in Borno State.

From 2007 to 2011, Shettima served as a Commissioner for 5 Ministries. In the ANPP primary elections in January 2011, engineer Modu Fannami Gubio was selected as a governor candidate.

Gubio won a second primary election in February 2011 before being later murdered by assailants. On April 26, 2011, Shettima received 531,147 votes, giving him the victory.

He was elected to represent Borno Central Senatorial District in 2019.

He was selected by the All Progressive Congress (APC) to run as their vice presidential candidate in 2022, joining Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who emerged victorious at the 2023 poll.

CONTROVERSY

Soon after it was announced that Kashim Shettima will be Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s running partner in the presidential election in 2023, there was substantial disagreement about the candidate.

He was charged with harboring Kabiru Sokoto, the alleged mastermind of the 2011 Christmas Day bombing of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.

On the other hand, Senator Kashim Shettima’s comparison to the dreaded Boko Haram sect has drawn criticism from Senator Shehu Sani, a human rights advocate and member of the Eighth National Assembly.

He added that the remarks that followed the choice of Shettima, such as hints and charges linking him to the origins, growth, and devastation by the Boko Haram organisation, were abhorrent and cunning.
