Biography

Ali Pate was born on September 6th, 1968 in Misau LGA of Bauchi State.

His father is a Fulani herdsman but details about his mother and siblings are unavailable at the time of this post.

He resides in Northern Nigeria with his wife and children.

Pate graduated from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with a degree in Medicine before moving to the university college, London.

He studied for a Master’s degree in Health System Management from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom.

He has an MBA in Health Sector Concentration from Duke University, USA.

He is a Fellow in infectious diseases from the University of Rochester Medical Center, USA and a certified American board MD in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

Career

Pate worked with the World Bank in Washington, D.C. for several years and held senior positions including Senior Health Specialist and Human Development Sector Coordinator for the East Asia/Pacific Region and Senior Health Specialist for the African Region.

While at the World Bank, he was appointed to head the National Primary Health Care Agency (NPHCDA) in 2008.

In this position, he piloted health sector reform programmes in Africa, East Asia and other regions of the World Bank.

Of note is his initiation of landmark Public–private partnership to replace a National Referral Hospital in Lesotho.

Following role as the head of NPHCDA, he was appointed Minister of State for Health in July, 2011.

He resigned in 2013 and took up the position of a professor in Duke University’s Global Health Institute, USA.

He is also the past chief executive officer of Big Win Philanthropy and an adjunct professor of Global Health of the Duke University Global Health Institute.

He resumed his position as a Julio Frenk Professor of the practice of Public Health Leadership at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in September 2021 after his appointment in 2019.

In February 2023, Muhammad Ali Pate was appointed chief executive officer of GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, which works to provide vaccines in low income countries and later in August, he was appointed Minister of Health and Social Welfare by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Awards

Muhammad Ali Pate was given a national honor as Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in October 2022 by president Muhammadu Buhari.

He also received the Harvard Health Leadership Award in 2012.
