Reps committee to investigate NHIS scheme over alleged misconduct

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is the subject of an investigation by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Healthcare Services.

After the adoption of a motion made by Esosa Iyawe, the decision was made on Tuesday.

Iyawe said in the motion that poor administration has caused the NHIA, formerly known as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), to experience a deterioration in quality.

He stated that

“despite the huge budgetary allocations, records have shown that only a negligible 3% of persons in the formal sector have access to health insurance.”

Mr Iyawe said the officials of the NHIA are conniving with Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) to embezzle the fund.

He said “the implementation of the scheme had been mired with corruption, lack of transparency and accountability, irregularities among HMOs and ill-treatment of enrollees by healthcare providers.”

The motion was adopted unanimously without debate by the House.
