Senators okays Tinubu’s dismissal of FCCPC boss

The Senate declared on Wednesday that President Bola Tinubu has the authority under Nigerian labor law to terminate any Chief Executive Officer of a government agency, including Barr. Irukera of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

The upper legislative Chamber’s resolution followed a motion presented by Senator Michael Bamidele Opeyemi, who cited a violation of Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) regulations.

Senator Opeyemi, who represents the Ekiti Central Senatorial District and is the Leader of the 10th Senate, urged the Senate to investigate the expulsion of the FCCPC’s Chief Executive and Executive Vice Chairman and restore him.

“That the Senate do consider the request of Mr. President, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the removal of the CEO of FCCPC.”

After contributions by some lawmakers on the motion, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio in his remarks, said, the President has power under the Nigeria Labour Law to hire and fire.

“Appointments of public officers are done under the Labour Law and you cannot force a willing servant on an unwilling master.”

The motion was thrown out following its rejection through voice votes.
