Senegal seals round of 16 ticket with stunning 3-1 win against Cameroon

Senegal, the defending champions, advanced to the final 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Cameroon 3–1.
Ismaila Sarr put Senegal up in the 16th minute, and Habib Diallo made it 2-0 midway through the second half.
With seven minutes remaining, Jean-Charles Castelletto headed in to equalize, setting up a dramatic finish.
After George-Kevin Nkoudou missed a free header to tie the game, Sadio Mane clinched the victory in stoppage time.
Senegal will lead Group C if they avoid defeat against Guinea in their last group game on Tuesday (17:00 GMT).
Guinea are second in the table after defeating The Gambia 1-0 in the late game on Friday, meaning Cameroon will most likely need to defeat the Scorpions on Tuesday (17:00 GMT) to advance to the knockout stages.
The five-time continental winners, who have one point from two games, might advance as one of the four best third-placed teams if they do not surpass Guinea in goal differential or goals scored.
Cameroon’s Andre Onana was back in goal after missing their 1-1 draw with Guinea on Monday to play for Manchester United in the Premier League 24 hours earlier.
However, the 27-year-old was undoubtedly at fault for Senegal’s opening goal, which came after his clearing punch from a corner was headed back into the box by Pape Matar Sarr, and forward Ismaila Sarr shot into the bottom right corner.
The West Africans extended their lead in the 71st minute, when Diallo slipped between Enzo Tchato and Castelletto to finish Ismaila Sarr’s low pass from six yards out.
Cameroon lacked a danger up front for the majority of the game, with striker Vincent Aboubakar – the top scorer in the 2021 finals – out again due to injury and Karl Toko Ekambi dropping to the bench.
However, the Indomitable Lions came to life in the closing ten minutes when centre-back Castelletto strongly headed in Olivier Ntcham’s cross from a short corner.
They pressed for a draw, but Nkoudou squandered the greatest opportunity in the 94th minute, diverting another right-wing cross wide at the back post.
Senegal went right up the other end to secure the points, with former Liverpool forward Mane neatly guiding Idrissa Gana Gueye’s pass into the bottom left corner from just inside the box.
Aliou Cisse led the Teranga Lions to their first African Cup of Nations victory two years ago, and their title defence has begun flawlessly as Senegal seeks to become the first team to defend the trophy since Egypt won their third in a succession in 2010.
