Early life
Sim Fubara, born in Opobo Town in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State on January 28th, 1975.
Education
He attended Opobo Primary School and the Comprehensive Secondary School, Opobo before proceeding to study Accountancy at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology.
He got his MBA and MSc in 2013 and 2016 respectively from the University of Port Harcourt.
In a quest to be more enlightened, he has participated in several professional conferences, seminars, workshops and training programmes, including the Federal Government of Nigeria National Training Workshops on Public Finance Management at the Federal Treasury Academy, Orozo, Abuja.
Rivers State Ministry of Finance Training Programme on International Public Sector Accounting Standards and Financial Euromoney Training and Rivers State Government/Transglobal Business Solution Limited Training Workshop on Development and Performance Measurement in Rivers State Public Finance Sector.
Career
In 2003, Sim served as a principal accountant with the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board.
He was elavated to the position of director of finance and accounts at the State’s government house in 2015 and thereafter, the Permanent secretary in March 2020.
He was appointed the accountant general of Rivers State on December 23, 2020. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management, Fellow of Association of National Accountants of Nigeria and Fellow, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (FCTI).
Politics
He was party leader of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of the people’s Democratic party.
His leadership fostered unity and strengthened the party in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.
In May 2022, he won the People’s Democratic Party governorship primaries for the 2023 general elections and in 2023, he won in the Rivers State gubernatorial election and was subsequently sworn in as Governor of the state.
Personal life
His father, late Joseph Fubara was a former military officer and his mother, late Mrs Love Fubara was a civil servant.
He is the first son and second child among five siblings.
Sim Fubara is a Christian and is married to Mrs Valerie Fubara and they have three children.
He is also a sponsor and Patron of the Women Prayer Network in Opobo Town dedicated to supplicating for peace and progress of the town and its people.
Sponsored projects
As Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara signed N195.3bn contract with Julius Berger for the construction of Port Harcourt Ring Road project.
The project when completed would traverse six local government areas of the state, thereby decongesting Port Harcourt.
The governor further stated the state would pay over 150 billion advance for the project.
Controversy
In May 2022, Fubara and 58 other government officials were declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for a #435 billion theft.
He was also wanted for a #117 billion fraud alongside four other Rivers State government officials.
Additional charges by the EFCC included alleged criminal conspiracy, money laundering, misappropriation of public funds, and abuse of office but Fubara still stands his grounds that he is innocent of the allegations.
Recognitions
He holds the traditional chieftaincy title of Amaopu-Senibo of Opobo Kingdom.
In 2020, he was honored with the prestigious Knight of Saint Christopher (KSC) order of the Anglican Communion of Nigeria by the Evo Diocese of the Anglican Communion in recognition of his service to humanity and church.
