South Africa defeats Cape Verde in shootout as goalkeeper saves four penalties
Captain Ronwen Williams saved four penalties to help South Africa advance to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals after a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde.
Bebe, Willy Semedo, Laros Duarte, and Patrick Andrade were all stopped in the shootout by the exceptional Williams, who also made a fantastic late save to tip Gilson Benchimol’s first-time strike against the post, forcing the torturous quarter-final into extra time.
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha produced two outstanding stops in quick succession immediately after extra time began, denying Mihlali Mayambela and Teboho Mokoena.
South Africa will now have the opportunity to revenge their 2-0 loss to Nigeria in the last Afcon semi-finals in 2000.
