Stop POS agents from selling Naira to Nigerians – Activist tells EFCC
Nwapa also asked the anti-graft agency to arrest people in different financial institutions across the country making Nigerians buy naira in their own country.
Francis Nwapa, a human rights activist, has requested that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) put an end to Point of Sale (POS) operators purchasing naira from individuals and financial institutions and then reselling it to Nigerians at a high price.
Nwapa also asked the anti-graft agency to arrest people in different financial institutions across the country making Nigerians buy naira in their own country.
The activist said that making Nigerians buy naira in their country is the worst form of naira abuse. He, therefore, urged the relevant authorities to ensure that Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) across the country work effectively and efficiently.
Making the demand in a post on his X account on Sunday, Nwapa said, “Some people somewhere within the financial institutions & ensuring Nigerians are buying Naira in their own country.
“This is the worst Naira abuse. EFCC this is your responsibility, stop the POS buying of Naira! Make Bank ATMs work!”
It would be recalled that since the naira scarcity that hit Nigeria in 2023 following the naira redesign policy of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, many bank ATMs have not returned to their full service of dispensing cash to customers across the country.
Since the naira scarcity birthed by the redesign policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under the leadership of the embattled former Governor Godwin Emefiele, most Nigerians have been at the mercy of POS operators to get naira notes. However, it comes with charges.
