Early life
Tems belongs to the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. She was born on 11th June, 1995 in Lagos State and christened with the name Temilade Openiyi.
Education
Tems stayed in the United Kingdom briefly before she her family returned to Nigeria where she South Africa.
Career
Tems love for music was displayed right from her early years when she learned how to play instruments alongside her brother. In 2018, she released her debut single, “Mr Rebel” followed by “Try Me” in 2019.
In 2020, she featured with Davido on on a reworked version of American singer-songwriter Khalid and English electronic music duo Disclosure’s single, “Know Your Worth”.
She later released her debut extended play(EP) for broken ears and she also dropped another hit single “Try Me” which ranked at number one on the Nigerian Apple Music chart and number six on the then-newly launched TurnTable Top 50 chart with over five million views on YouTube.
She also appeared on Wizkid’s song titled “Essence” and this song brought her to the limelight earning her a Grammy Award nomination.
She also featured on Future’s 2022 single Wait For You alongside Drake and it debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first African artist to debut at number one and the second Nigerian artist to top the chart.
Me & U was a hit single she released in 2023 and it ranked top on the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart and number 34 on the UK Singles Chart while in the United States, it reached number 10 on Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart.
Through her love and passion for music, she has written and released numerous hit songs including; Try Me, Damage, Crazy Things, Vibe out, Free Mind, The Key, Replay, Wait For You, If Orange was a place, Me & U, Mr. Rebel, Try Me, For Broken ears and many more.

Tems was raised in a christian home of the Yoruba descent, she has so far strived to be rated among the top female afropop artists globally.

In December 2020, Tems alongside fellow Nigerian singer, Omah Lay was apprehended by the Ugandan police for violating the COVID-19 protocols during a stage performance in Uganda, however, they were later acquitted the Ugandan Government.
