Tension as tribunal delivers verdict on Lagos guber election today

The Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will rule on petitions submitted by opposition political parties challenging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s re-election on Monday (today).

The Labour Party and its gubernatorial candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, as well as the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, had petitioned the court to overturn Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the March 18 election.

After receiving the most votes, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, named Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the victor of the gubernatorial race.

The Governor, who ran for a second term, won by a landslide, defeating Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party, who finished second.

Sanwo-Olu received 762,134 votes to defeat Rhodes-Vivour, who received 312,329 votes. Jide Adediran (Jandor) of the PDP finished third with 62,449 votes.

Unsatisfied with the election results, the LP, PDP, and their candidates petitioned the court to declare the election null and void due to claimed irregularities that, in their opinion, tainted the process.

According to the Labour Party, hundreds of voters were disenfranchised as a result of the violence that erupted in various sections of the state.

They also accused the ruling party of various electoral malpractices, such as overvoting and vote suppression.

On August 12, the petitioners’ lawyers submitted their last written addresses to the tribunal.

Following that, the Justice Arum Ashom-led panel announced over the weekend that the decision would be given on Monday (today).
