José Vítor dos Santos Peseiro is a Portuguese former football player who now functions as the Manager of the Nigeria national team, Super Eagles.
He took over the helm of leadership from Gernot Rohr on 15th May, 2022 and in January 2024, Peseiro led the Super Eagles to the African Cup of Nations tournament held in Cote d’Ivoire.

Had a brief stint as a player
Peseiro was born on 4th April, 1960 in Coruche, Santarém District. He began playing at Lisboa e Cartaxo representing Amora FC, Clube Oriental de Lisboa, GD Samora Correia and S.C.U. Torreense for five seasons and then moved on to Segunda Liga before he retired at the age of 34 from local club União de Santarém.
First Portuguese Super Eagles Coach
The NFF broke the records when Peseiro was appointed as the new Head Coach of the national team as he becomes the first-ever coach from Portugal. Over the years, the team has always been managed by Dutch and German Coaches but Peseiro comes in to take the team to the next level in International football.
A popular figure in the African continent
Before managing the Super Eagles, Peseiro has successfully worked with other African teams like the Egyptian club side, Al Ahly SC where he served meritoriously.
Worked with top club sides
After retiring as a player, he went on to coach several high ranking clubs including FC Porto, Real Madrid, Sporting CP and S.C. Braga.
He also worked extensively in Arab nations, being in charge of the Saudi Arabia national team.
Recorded poor performances by his team
Irrespective of the years of experience he gathered while working with different teams, he has also recorded some poor football performances which led to loosing out on some tournaments.. Beginning from Panathinaikos to FC Porto to Braga and even Saudi Arabia, he has so far recorded losses but is still determined to nurture the best players who will emerge stars.
Worked with Venezuela
Peseiro made a stint with Venezuela after the resignation of Rafael Dudamel leading them to a 3–0 loss away to Colombia in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification. His stay with this side was abrupt as he resigned due to unpaid wages for over a year amidst the South American country’s economic crisis.
