UCL: Osimhen’s strike salvage point for Napoli against Barcelona

Victor Osimhen saved a draw for Napoli in his first club appearance since December, as they held Barcelona in the Champions League last-16 first leg.

Robert Lewandowski gave Barcelona the lead in Italy in the 60th minute, arrowing a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Barcelona dominated Napoli, who struggled in the final third in Francesco Calzona’s debut game in charge.

However, the hosts eventually equalised when Osimhen sneaked past his opponent in the box and fired past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

The second leg is scheduled for March 12 in Barcelona.

Osimhen was a member of the Nigeria team that lost to Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations final in February, and he was suspended for the team’s most recent league game.

The visitors enjoyed a better start, with 16-year-old Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player to reach the Champions League knockout stage, making advances on the right side.

Xavi’s team pressed hard in the final third, shutting off Napoli’s attempts to build from the back and negating the hosts’ ability to threaten.

Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret was forced to parry attempts from Yamal and Lewandowski before reacting superbly to palm away an Ilkay Gundogan long-range effort.

The Italians have struggled in their Serie A title defence, sitting in ninth position and trailing champions Juventus by 27 points, and replaced Walter Mazzarri with Calzona, who is also Slovakia’s manager, on Tuesday.

However, there were little signs of rapid improvement, and Napoli did not register a single shot in the first half, a first in the Champions League.

Osimhen attempted to make runs behind the defence but was frequently left isolated as the hosts failed to generate movement in Barcelona’s half.

Xavi’s side, which has struggled in La Liga and is eight points behind leaders Real Madrid, dominated for much of the encounter, but Napoli grew into the game in the second half and became more active after making substitutions.

Barcelona broke the deadlock through Lewandowski and appeared to be on their way to win, but the hosts recovered and came back to a draw.
