Biography
Alex Otti hails from Umuru, Umuehim village in Isiala Ngwa South LGA of Abia State. He is the son of Pastor and Mrs. Lazarus Weze Otti and was born on February 18th, 1965.
He attended the prestigious Ngwa High School, Aba and Technical School, Okpuala Ngwa in Abia State.
He then studied at the University of Port Harcourt and graduated with a degree in Economics in 1988. He further earned an MBA degree from the University of Lagos in 1994.
He has attended various international courses so as to be more more enlightened, they include the Executive Development Programmes of the Columbia, Stanford and Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania).
He also did an executive programme at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France.
In 2009, he received an honorary doctorate degree by Babcock University and in 2012, an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) Degree by the University of Port Harcourt.
In 2013, he received another honorary doctorate degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Career
In 1989, he began with the Nigerian International Bank, a subsidiary of Citibank New York, where he served in the operations department before moving to the then Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank Ltd where he served in the treasury and financial services unit as well as the corporate banking division.
In 1992, he joined Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited (Merchant Bankers), a subsidiary of Banque SBA Paris where he rose to the position of a senior manager.
He moved on to the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as the principal manager overseeing the bank’s corporate banking sector for the entire South Division with the responsibility of growing the oil and gas business for the bank.
In May 2001, he joined First Bank of Nigeria, PLC as assistant general manager in with the key objective of growing the Energy Sector for the bank.
In April 2004, he was promoted to the position of deputy general manager, and a year later was appointed executive director, commercial banking and subsequently made director of the Southern and Eastern region of the bank.
In March 2011, he joined Diamond Bank as group managing director/ chief executive officer and served for two tenures, leading the bank throgh series of transformations.
On October 24, 2014, Otti took voluntary retirement and Uzoma Dozie became the new GMD and Bank CEO.
Political history
He joined the All progressive’s grand alliance (APGA) and contested as Governor but he lost to Okezie Ikpeazu of the People’s Democratic party after a reversal verdict by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
He later Joined the Labour Party in 2022 and contested for the gubernatorial seat which he eventually won and became Governor of Abia State since March, 2023.
Personal life
Gov. Alex Otti is a Christian and married to Mrs Priscilla Otti and they have children together.
He also runs a Foundation, with a keen interest in helping the less privileged in schools across the LGAs of Abia state.
