Tyla was born in Johannesburg on 30th January, 2002. She hails from a family of Zulu, Indian, Mauritian and Irish ethnicity.

She grew up in Johannesburg where she was born, she attended Edenglen High School where she was the school’s head of culture.

Tyla began showing her interest in music during her high school days when she began posting original songs and covers via her Instagram page as well as sending them out to a number of figures in the music industry.
